As Shattila Ekadashi is celebrated on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha in Magh month, this year the auspicious day falls on January 25, 2025 (Saturday). Ekadashi Tithi starts at 07:25 PM on 24th January and ends at 08:31 PM on 25th January. The Prana Time (when you can eat food after the fast) is from 07:12 AM to 09:21 AM. Therefore, the devotees can have their last meal on the afternoon of the 24th and break their fast on the 25th morning.

According to a legend, Shattila Ekadashi Vrath Katha begins with a wealthy elderly woman who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. She used to worship the lord with great devotion and dedication. Once she kept fast for a whole month to worship the lord and offered a lot for charity including clothing, jewellery and other valuable items but never offered food items or Til to anyone. To make her realise the importance of food, one day Lord Krishna converted himself into a Brahmin and asked the lady for alm. She got angry and offered him a pile of mud. After she died, she went to heaven where she was given a hut to live and a mango tree outside it. When she saw the hut empty, she became sad that after all the worshipping this is what she got.

Lord Vishnu appeared in front of her and told her that she never offered food to the Brahmins so got an empty house. She realised her mistake and asked the Lord for forgiveness. He asked her to observe fast on Shattila Ekadashi which will help her get rid of her sins and get whatever she desires. Upon observing the fast on Shattila Ekadashi, soon started receiving things she desired. Thus the Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha makes us realise the importance of donating food and til to the Brahmins on this auspicious day. From that day onwards, Till or sesame seeds are extensively used as offerings to the lord in the form of puja samagri (worship material) and bhog (offerings).

They avoid eating grains, rice and certain pulses as they are believed to increase tamas (inertia) in the human body which becomes a hindrance in spiritual growth.

However, the consumption of sesame seeds is considered significant as it is considered one of the purest forms of food believed to have originated from Lord Vishnu’s sweat during Samudra Manthan. • Light a diya with desi ghee, put tilak, keep a tulsi leaf, adorn the lord’s idol with a garland and keep a bowl filled with sesame seeds.
• Take a sankalp (resolution) while chanting prayers for Lord Vishnu.
• Add the seeds in Gangajal and sprinkle over the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu followed by bathing the idol with Panchamrit (cow milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar).
• Recite Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
• Perform Vishnu Puja and offer the lord a bhog made of sesame seeds and other food items.
• Donate sesame seeds to the poor.
• Repeat the puja the next morning and conclude the fast during the prana of Dwadashi by eating Prasad.

29th October – Dhanteras

The first day of Diwali is known as ‘Dhanteras’ or ‘Dhantrayodashi’ which sets the mood for the beginning of the Diwali celebration. Dhanteras consists of two words, ‘Dhan’ meaning wealth and ‘teras’ meaning thirteen i.e., the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). 31st October – Narak Chaturdashi

The second day of the Diwali festival is called Narak Chaturdashi. This day signifies the triumph of Lord Krishna or Mahakali over a ferocious demon, Narakasur. On this special occasion, people worship Mahakali or Shakti and thus this day is also referred to as Kali Chaudas. Significance of Visakha Utsav

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and the Vishakhapatnam Metropolitan region Development Authority organise Visakha Utsav every year to celebrate the unique culture and traditions of the South Indian state.

The first time Visakha Utsav was conducted in the year 1997 to promote tourism and show the world a short glimpse of AP’s cultural heritage. What is the Losar Festival?

Losar is the Tibetan New Year when all the Buddhist communities from the region will gather to welcome a new Lunar year. The Lunar Calendar for 2024 will begin on the day people celebrate Losar Festival 2024. If we take the literal meaning of the word, ‘sar’ implies ‘year’ and lo implies ‘new’. The families come together, attend the festivities in the monasteries, offer heartfelt prayers and ask for a prosperous year ahead. It is prominently celebrated in the Himalayan region in India where Tibetan Buddhism is practiced. The Ladakh monasteries, which are otherwise silent and peaceful, will welcome the new lunar year with traditional dances, melodious music, ancestral rituals and more!

The first and foremost thing to note is that Losar Festival 2024 is important to the Tibetan Buddhist community. They believed that the practice drives away evil and negative energy and their prayers will invite devotional presence into their houses.

Important Dates of the Losar Festival 2024

This year, Losar Festival 2024 is going to fall on February 10th. So, you can expect the northeast and Ladakh regions to be involved in the festivities till February 25th. However, you must know that the celebrations start two days before the actual dates of the Losar Festival 2024. From February 8th, people will be fully immersed in preparing for the arrival of the Tibetan New Lunar Year. These two days, February 8th and 9th,  along with the actual day of Losar, February 10th, are of great importance and can be considered the ‘Big Three’ days of the event.

Three-Day Schedule of the Losar Festival

Lama Losar – Day 1 of the Festival

Lama Losar is going to fall on February 8th during the Losar Festival 2024. This is the day when people of the Tibetan Buddhist communities will start to clean their houses, get rid of any of the old items, and cleanse the prayer rooms. Later, they prepare a special noodle dish called the ‘Gu-Thuk’ and feast on it. People celebrating the festival also go to the monasteries, seek blessings from the lamas  (spiritual leader who takes care of the monasteries and leads the monks) and spend some quiet time meditating. They also sing hymns and pray for a good life. The people who visit monasteries will be offered Changkoi which is made out of Chhaang, a Tibetan alcoholic beverage made from rice.

Gyalpo Losar or King’s Losar – Day 2 of the Festival

King’s Losar is considered to be the last day of the previous Tibetan Lunar Calendar. This means that February 9th is the day the 2023 Lunar calendar will come to an end. On this special day, people offer prayers in the monasteries, perform traditional rituals and shrug off the worries and tensions of the past. As a token of respect and admiration, they also offer gifts to monks in the monasteries. The monks will also perform cleansing rituals and a ‘deity pooja’ to invoke the blessings of the Gods. One of the most interesting things that will happen on this day is the burning of firecrackers and fire torches at night! People believe that the brightness and elegance of these firecrackers will scare away evil spirits. 

Choe Kyong Losar or Losar Festival – Day 3

On the day of the Losar Festival 2024, people in all households will wake up early in the morning and dress up in new attires. Everything that was old in the house will already be discarded on Day – 1. The married women in the house will wake up before sunrise, go to the nearby rivers and fetch their first bucket of water. It is believed that this will bring good luck and happiness into the house. Before they step out to enjoy the festivities, believers will place some water and offerings on their porch or doorstep to attract a good harvest in the 2024 lunar year. 

It is important to have a family reunion on this day and enjoy a good dinner together. People also exchange gifts and cook for each other. This will keep the atmosphere in the house lively and positive. It is believed that this happiness will last the entire year. Under any circumstances, people do not cry, whine or think of negative things during the Losar Festival. 

The festival will last for a total of 15 days when relatives visit each others’ houses, offer prayers in monasteries, and there is a lot of dance and music, of course! 

Main Highlight of Losar Tibetan New Year

The main highlight of Losar Tibetan New Year is the Sand Mandalas. These are extravagant, intricate designs that are made of sand and the detailing is so precise! The monks make these mandalas from different coloured sands and you will find them in all monasteries during Losar Festival 2024. The mandalas signify life and its journey. 

How, you say?

The monks take several days to make these mandalas. The mandalas are kept around for 15 days and ceremoniously disintegrated once the festival comes to an end. This signifies the cycle of life – the efforts to bring life to this planet, nourishing it, watching it grow and eventually understanding that all good things come to an end. The purpose is served. 

How To Reach Ladakh?

To witness the glory of the Losar Festival 2024, you will have to come to Ladakh. This is where all of the monasteries will actively celebrate the annual festival. This is how you can reach Ladakh. 

By Air

Taking a flight is one of the best ways to reach Ladakh. The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. This is about 4 km away from Ladakh and you can easily find taxi services to reach Ladakh. The airport is also well-connected with other cities like Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and more. People travelling from the South can reach Chandigarh first, halt and then take a flight to Leh from here.

History

Wangala festival is celebrated to express thankfulness to the God of the Sun known as Misi Saljong. Popularly known as the 100 Drums Festival, the celebration started in the year 1967. Day 1 of the Celebration 

The very first day of the festival starts with a traditional ceremony. It is known as Rugala which is conducted in the house of the chief known as Nokma. The ritual involves pouring rice beer and burning incense sticks by a priest. It is indeed a spectrum of different emotions as you witness this beautiful practice.

On this day, a special rice paste is prepared to decorate the chief’s house. The paste is also used to decorate everyone’s house in the village. This day also includes many other customs which are valued in the Garo community.

What is the Hornbill Festival?

The world has changed and technological developments have made our lives better. Some of the older customs and beliefs are forgotten to pave the way for newer innovations. But that is not how things work in Nagaland. The people of the Naga tribe along with the other sub-tribes go to great efforts to preserve their morals, customs, beliefs and traditional practices. The Hornbill Festival is celebrated to remind each other of these traditional beliefs and bask in the glory of their excellence.

The people of the tribes dress up in their native attires, women cook their signature cuisines, and the men deck up with their spears, armoury, and headgear. Do you know? The men had to fight, compete and win to get their hands on the headgear or the weapons which are considered to be a man’s pride.

The festival gets its name from the bird, the Great Indian Hornbill, which is revered by the people of the Naga tribe. Where is the Hornbill Festival celebrated?

The Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is celebrated in the Kisama Heritage Village, Kohima which is about 5km from Nagaland. This is a small place where a large number of Naga tribal people live and most of the events are centered here. However, you will need a permit to come here and we will discuss all about it in the next section.

The Great Indian Hornbill is greatly respected by the native Naga tribe. In the olden days, the feathers of this bird’s plumage were used to decorate the headgear of the warriors. It is a matter of pride and honour. Nagas used to hunt the birds extensively which almost led to their extinction. The government tried to talk them out of it but they were not ready to overlook their customs.

However, when they noticed that the birds were really disappearing in large numbers, the hunting decreased significantly. In 2000, the organisation of the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland began and people began singing songs and praises of the majestic bird during the event.

Dates and Permits for the Festival

The Hornbill festival will last for a total of 10 days starting from 1st December to 10th December every year. It will begin at 9:30 AM every day. The ticket will cost you around INR 20 – 30 and needs to be purchased for each day before you enter the festive grounds. A mandatory security check will be conducted before you get seated to witness the cultural exhibitions. 

However, for those who are not native to Nagaland, you will need an Inner Line Permit to attend the Hornbill Festival. This will cost you INR 50 for 15 days and INR 500 for 365 days. Foreign tourists must also hold a permit to enter the place. Additionally, they must list their names at the local Foreigner’s Registration Office(FRO) within 24 hours of their arrival. 

Domestic tourists can get their permit from the office of the Deputy Resident Commissioner in Guwahati, Shimla, New Delhi or Kolkata. Even after coming to Nagaland, you can get a permit from the Deputy Commissioner’s office at Dimapur.

As we told you earlier, the Hornbill Festival is a 10-day event that will keep you entertained throughout. The order of events will differ from year to year but you will find these festive celebrations every time you attend the festival

Cultural Performances

There will be performances by the Naga tribe on all ten days. Each day, you will find a different set of dancers showcasing their talents, the music maestros swaying to the most splendid tunes, and people enjoying the exhilaration and excitement! 

Handlooms and Handicrafts

The Hornbill Festival also helps with improving the eco-tourism and local livelihood of the place. The Naga tribal people are known to make some of the best handicrafts that you can use as display items or house decor. The handlooms are great additions to your wardrobe.

Indigenous Games and Exhilarating Sports

There are several indigenous games that the Naga tribal teams play and entertain the crowd during the Hornbill Festival. Naga King Chilly and Pineapple Eating Competition

Naga cuisine is innately spicy and they use the infamous King Chilly to make the dishes. The Naga Chilly eating competition involves eating as many chillies as possible in a short period of time. The pineapple-eating competition involves the same thing but the competants will be eating juicy pineapples in a short span! 

Rock Concerts 

You can also see some of the famous local artists, and national and international talents performing on an extravagant stage during the Hornbill Festival. Northeastern talents like Harmonic Voices, Colored Keys, Renbeni, and Angam & Friends performed here. 

Bamboo Carnival and Night Carnival

You can enjoy the bamboo carnival where you can see bamboo food stalls, cultural performances using bamboo, bamboo art, artifacts made with bamboo, and workshops where the ecological significance of bamboo is explained to the attendees. 

The Night Carnival is a sparkly night bazaar where you will find stalls, craft bazaars, handlooms, handicrafts, bonfires and campfires, and impressive dance processions. With loud DJ music and an unlimited supply of rice beer, you will enjoy the night carnival.

• There are food stalls that offer the delicious northeastern cuisines of Nagaland. The Naga tribe also makes some dishes that are otherwise not found anywhere else. You should couple the food with the chilled rice beer that is very famous in the region. 
• Tourists can gear up for the Naga King chilli eating competition! If your stomach can tolerate spice, enter this competition and prove yourself to be the champion. There will be newbies as well as experienced competitors who were a part of the event in the previous years as well. 
• Not just the Naga tribe, 16 other sub-tribes also take part in this event. So, you will be seeing a diverse array of cultures in one place.  
• You can arrive at the venue early and interact with the dancers and other performers. After seeking their permission, you can click pictures with them and make memories. But remember to be respectful of their choices.  

Things to Note for Visitors

There are certain things that the visitors and tourists coming to Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival must do. Think of these as the necessary Do’s and Don’ts that will make your time on this land much more worthwhile. 

• Do not forget to acquire the Inner Line Permit before entering the village in Kohima. Otherwise, you will be liable for legal action and trust us, you don’t want to deal with the mess that follows.
• Though you can buy your tickets at the venue, we suggest that you make an advanced booking for ten days to avoid the hassle and inconvenience of standing in a long line. 
• While interacting with the local tribes, be very respectful of them. Do not cross the line and disrespect their beliefs and customs.
• There are several stalls around the venue where you can buy souvenirs made by local people. You can bargain for the best deals so do not shy away from showcasing your skills. 
• It is good for foreign tourists to have the ILP while entering Nagaland but it is not mandatory as it is for domestic visitors. However, it is mandatory to list your name at the Foreigner’s Registration Office. 
• Littering is strictly prohibited and the locals frown upon those who dirty their land. So, find the dustbins to properly dispose of your waste and absolutely do not SPIT anywhere in the venue. 
• There is an information centre in the Kisama Heritage Village where you can learn everything about the day’s events and the schedule of all 10 days. 

How to Reach Kohima – Nagaland

By Air

Kohima doesn’t have its own airport and the nearest one is in Dimapur. It is about 74km away from Kohima. The international travellers should land either in Kolkata, Guwahati or Delhi International Airport. Then, you can take a bus or taxi from these places to Kohima. 

By Rail

There are trains from all over India that will bring you to Kolkata or Guwahati. You can also reach Delhi Railway station.  Seeing how Kohima is a hilly region, there is no railway station there and you should take a car or bus to reach Kohima from these places. 

If you are stopping in Guwahati for a short time before going toward Kohima, you can book your accommodation at Hotels in Guwahati for the most convenient and comfortable stay. 

By Road

If you are travelling within the northeastern states like Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur, you will have to take NH39 to reach Kohima. You can also take cabs and taxis to reach Guwahati first and then travel toward Kohima.
