According to the Hindu Calendar, there are various significant days dedicated to various gods and goddesses. One of the important days is Ekadashi dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It falls on the 11th day of every month according to the lunar calendar and each month has two Ekadashis. One Ekadashi falls on Krishna Paksha and the other on Shukla Paksha. Out of 24 Ekadashis (26 during the Hindu leap year), Shattila Ekadashi is celebrated on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Magh (usually the February month). The day is also known as Papharni Vrat and devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna by observing a fast to get rid of their sins and attain Moksha (the cycle of birth and death).

Shattila Ekadashi is celebrated to worship lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi

Shattila Ekadashi is known by different names including Shat-Tila Ekadashi, Stilla Ekadashi, Sattila Ekadashi, Magh Krishna Ekadashi and Tilda Ekadashi. As these names suggest, Til (sesame seeds) have a major significance on this day. Donating Til (sesame seeds) and offering them to Lord Vishnu and the forefathers is considered auspicious on the day. So, let’s learn more about the day through its dates, timings, history, significance and the benefits and how to celebrate the occasion.

Dates and Timings of Shattila Ekadashi

As Shattila Ekadashi is celebrated on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha in Magh month, this year the auspicious day falls on January 25, 2025 (Saturday). Ekadashi Tithi starts at 07:25 PM on 24th January and ends at 08:31 PM on 25th January. The Prana Time (when you can eat food after the fast) is from 07:12 AM to 09:21 AM. Therefore, the devotees can have their last meal on the afternoon of the 24th and break their fast on the 25th morning.

Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha

According to a legend, Shattila Ekadashi Vrath Katha begins with a wealthy elderly woman who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. She used to worship the lord with great devotion and dedication. Once she kept fast for a whole month to worship the lord and offered a lot for charity including clothing, jewellery and other valuable items but never offered food items or Til to anyone. To make her realise the importance of food, one day Lord Krishna converted himself into a Brahmin and asked the lady for alm. She got angry and offered him a pile of mud. After she died, she went to heaven where she was given a hut to live and a mango tree outside it. When she saw the hut empty, she became sad that after all the worshipping this is what she got.

Lord Vishnu appeared in front of her and told her that she never offered food to the Brahmins so got an empty house. She realised her mistake and asked the Lord for forgiveness. He asked her to observe fast on Shattila Ekadashi which will help her get rid of her sins and get whatever she desires. Upon observing the fast on Shattila Ekadashi, soon started receiving things she desired. Thus the Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha makes us realise the importance of donating food and til to the Brahmins on this auspicious day. From that day onwards, Till or sesame seeds are extensively used as offerings to the lord in the form of puja samagri (worship material) and bhog (offerings).

Shattila Ekadashi Significance

Shattila Ekadashi is observed to please Lord Vishnu to get rid of past sins and attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Observing a fast on the day has both spiritual and health benefits. Shattila Ekadashi significance includes prosperity, wealth, liberation and spiritual growth fostering compassion and humility.

Devotees perform kirtan on Shattila Ekadashi.

The day helps one do away with worldly distractions and connect with the almighty.

Health Benefits of Shattila Ekadashi

Along with the spiritual significance, there are various health benefits of observing fast on Shattila Ekadashi which are as follows:

  • Natural Detoxification: Observing a fast on Ekadashi, offers a break to the digestive system which further helps to detoxify naturally.
  • Improves Gut Health: Fasting at regular intervals reduces the digestive load and improves gut health and digestion.
  • Weight Management: With detoxification and improved gut health, it becomes easier to increase metabolism and control weight.

Rituals during Shattila Ekadashi

If you wish to keep a fast for Shattila Ekadashi, like any other Ekadashi fast, it commences on the dawn of Ekadashi and continues till the morning of Dwadashi. The fast is broken during the prana on Dwadashi after prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu. Devotees on Shattila Ekadashi observe either nirjala (without water) fast or falahar (consume only milk, fruits or nuts), some even eat only sesame seeds throughout the day. They avoid eating grains, rice and certain pulses as they are believed to increase tamas (inertia) in the human body which becomes a hindrance in spiritual growth.

Devotees apply Tilak on Shattila Ekadashi.

However, the consumption of sesame seeds is considered significant as it is considered one of the purest forms of food believed to have originated from Lord Vishnu’s sweat during Samudra Manthan. Adding some sesame seeds to the water is considered auspicious on the day. You can also make ubtan or a paste of sesame seeds and apply it while taking a bath. It is also considered auspicious to use sesame seeds in puja samagri and bhog to be offered to Lord Vishnu. You can also donate the seeds on this day as it is believed that the more you donate the sesame seeds the longer you may stay in heaven.

Here are some of the rituals you can follow on Shattila Ekadashi:

  • Skip dinner the previous day, wake up early on Shattila Ekadashi and take a bath adding sesame seeds to the water.
  • Clean the house and puja room and make an altar to place Lord Vishnu’s idol or picture.
  • Place Lord Vishnu’s idol or picture on the altar.
  • Light a diya with desi ghee, put tilak, keep a tulsi leaf, adorn the lord’s idol with a garland and keep a bowl filled with sesame seeds.
  • Take a sankalp (resolution) while chanting prayers for Lord Vishnu.
  • Add the seeds in Gangajal and sprinkle over the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu followed by bathing the idol with Panchamrit (cow milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar).
  • Recite Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
  • Perform Vishnu Puja and offer the lord a bhog made of sesame seeds and other food items.
  • Donate sesame seeds to the poor.
  • Repeat the puja the next morning and conclude the fast during the prana of Dwadashi by eating Prasad.

Thus, Shattila Ekadashi holds both spiritual significance and health benefits. Observing fast and worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day not only offers penance for past sins but also brings prosperity, good health and peace of mind. Donate food items and sesame seeds, clothes and other valuables to the poor. Doing so brings fortune, fulfils wishes and ensures your place is always filled with food and wealth.

Simply select an uninteresting wall or buy a small billboard along with a notepad and thumb pins. Write down your favourite memory and pin it to the board; the more images you have to remember those occasions, the better! Ask your friends and family to do the same. Add some heavenly balloons or a pastel garland for a pop of colour.

8. Deck Up Your Bar Cart

Having a bar cart for a New Year’s party is the best way to celebrate. Ask your friends to either select a drink of their choice or get a bottle of their own (this way there will be a variety of drinks). Play a drinks game to set the party mood and remember to keep some snacks to complement it.

9. Photobooth station

Who doesn’t like taking pictures? All of you Instagram addicts need to plan a photoshoot for New Year’s Eve. Props with New Year’s themes are popular these days, so they’re easy to find in stores or online. You can also have these personalized with resolutions you’re thinking about making, events you’re expecting, or anything else you want. Make hilarious or well-thought-out postures and take amazing photos to make New Year’s Eve a night to remember.

Diwali or Deepavali is a celebration that brings the light of hope and positivity. This Festival of Lights fills one’s heart with immense happiness! ‘Diwali’ is a modern term that we use for the festival but traditionally, it is known as ‘Deepavali Festival’. The word Deepavali comes from Sanskrit which means rows of lights. That is the reason why people light up their homes and workplaces with earthen lamps or electrical lights during the festival. Diwali Festival 2024 is going to last for five days during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika.

Want to know more about the Diwali Festival 2024? Here’s everything to know about the festival, how is it celebrated, and the prayers and practices!

When is Diwali 2024?

According to the Hindu calendar, Diwali is ideally celebrated on the 15th day of the Karthik month on an Amavasya. The exact date of Diwali 2024 will be Friday, 1st November 2024.

History and Significance of Celebrating Diwali Festival

There are several stories associated with the festival of lights – Diwali. According to the Hindu epic, Ramayan, It is believed that the people of Ayodhya hailed the homecoming of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman after a 14-year exile by illuminating the streets with earthen lamps. It was the darkest night in the Hindu lunisolar calendar’s Kartik month.

Since then, every year Diwali festival has been observed on Amavasya (no moon night) when people illuminate their homes and workplaces with ‘diyas’, to expel darkness. As per the Skanda Purana, the Diyas or the earthen lamps symbolise the Sun as the cosmic giver of light and energy.

diyas during Diwali

It is also believed by many Hindus that Goddess Lakshmi who is the Hindu Goddess of wealth and good fortune, was born during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean) on the day of Diwali. And that’s why Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on the day of the Diwali Festival. Lord Ganesha is also remembered and worshipped during the Diwali Function as he is a symbol of new beginnings.

Additionally, the Diwali festival marks the death and defeat of demons like Ravan by Lord Ram, Narkasur by Lord Krishna, and the arrogant Bali by Lord Vamana. And that’s why the Diwali festival is celebrated every year to mark the victory of good over evil, knowledge over arrogance, and light over darkness.

The three minority religions in India namely, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists have their own stories related to the Diwali Festival 2024. Sikhs believe that Diwali commemorates the release of their 17th-century Guru Hargobind after 12 years of imprisonment. Jains, who share many beliefs of Hinduism, will observe the Diwali Festival 2024 as the day when Lord Mahavira reached nirvana. For Buddhists, Diwali was the day when Hindu Emperor Ashoka converted to Buddhism.

What happens during the 5-day celebration of Diwali Festival 2024 in India?

The festival of lights is celebrated by more than a billion people of all faiths and features prayer, feasts and fireworks. As the stories and legends of Diwali Festival 2024 differ from region to region and culture to culture, the rituals and ways in which this festival is celebrated also differ. However, one thing is common across traditions, i.e., the feast of sweets, family gatherings, and the lighting of diyas that symbolise the brightness that shields each household from spiritual darkness.

29th October – Dhanteras

The first day of Diwali is known as ‘Dhanteras’ or ‘Dhantrayodashi’ which sets the mood for the beginning of the Diwali celebration. Dhanteras consists of two words, ‘Dhan’ meaning wealth and ‘teras’ meaning thirteen i.e., the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). On this day, people worship Lord Dhanwantari, who is also associated with Ayurveda and various healing practices. People also purchase utensils, jewellery or any other item for the household.

31st October – Narak Chaturdashi

The second day of the Diwali festival is called Narak Chaturdashi. This day signifies the triumph of Lord Krishna or Mahakali over a ferocious demon, Narakasur. On this special occasion, people worship Mahakali or Shakti and thus this day is also referred to as Kali Chaudas. It’s the perfect time to abolish laziness and evil which disturbs human life on Earth.

The celebration of this festive day is marked by using fragrant oils, sandalwood and flowers in the house to keep the vibrations uplifted. People in various parts of the country also make artistic patterns of ‘rangolis’ on the floor with coloured sand, powder, rice or flower petals.

People often ask the question – what oil is traditional when lighting lamps in honour of Diwali and Narak Chaturdashi? While most of us use mustard oil to light the lamps, it is said that using cow ghee will draw the attention of Lord Krishna, seeing how the cows were his best friends!

1st November – Diwali Lakshmi Pooja

The third day of the Diwali festival, i.e., Lakshmi Puja, holds the utmost significance. The most festive day of the five days which is celebrated with vibrance and great enthusiasm around the country.

Grand celebration is observed on this day marked by many diyas or clay lamps illuminating every nook and corner of houses and shops, beautiful rangolis, and flowers decorating the main entrance of the houses, and fireworks dotting the sky. On this occasion, all family members worship Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati seated next to her. It is followed by prasad distribution.

Children gather in their residential societies for group activities and spend quality time with their families and friends. Various events are organized during Diwali. There are Diwali Festival drawing competitions to keep the kids engaged while the elders are preparing for the puja.

Diwali is also considered to be the most auspicious day for traders and merchants’ families as they offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati, the giver of music, literature and wisdom and Kubera, the lord of wealth. This day also marks the first unofficial day of the financial new year for Indian Businessmen.

Some also love to spend Diwali visiting places that light up with big celebrations.

2nd November – Govardhan Pooja

On the fourth day of this five-day Diwali festival, Govardhan Puja is performed. This day has a story associated with it. The story of Gokul when Lord Krishna saved the villagers from the wrath of Lord Indra by lifting the Govardhan mountain.

On 2nd November, devotees observe fast, worship and offer food and sweets to Lord Krishna along with cows and calves. People celebrate by visiting temples, wearing new clothes and jewellery and distributing sweets and gifts among friends and neighbours.

3rd November – Bhai Dooj

The fifth day of the Diwali festival is Bhai Dooj. This day is solely dedicated to the bond of love and trust between a brother and a sister. The festival carries the legendary tale of the strong brotherly affection between Lord Yama and his sister Yami.

On this day, people observe a fast followed by aarti, applying a ‘teeka’ of rice and vermilion on the brother’s forehead and partaking of sweets. The brother promises to protect his sister while the sister prays for her brother’s long life. All five days of the Diwali festival celebrate human bond and inculcate feelings of truth, love, brotherhood and the divine light of oneness in all of us.

How to do Diwali Puja in 2024?

Diwali Puja is celebrated to seek blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, who symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and Lord Ganesh, known for wisdom and removing any obstacles. While customs may vary across regions, certain practices are widespread:

House Cleaning: A clean and orderly home is believed to attract Goddess Lakshmi. Hence, people start tidying their homes, often even repainting, a month before Diwali.

Puja Area Preparation: Many Hindu homes have a designated space for worship, which is thoroughly cleaned and adorned for the Lakshmi Puja. Idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi are placed here.

Decorating Homes: People make their homes more inviting by making colourful rangolis, and hanging posters and banners with symbols “Shubh” and “Labh”.

Puja Thali Preparations: The puja thali is assembled with items like flowers, a bell, kumkum, incense sticks, raw rice, red thread, and prasad (a sacred offering). Another thali may hold diyas (lamps) — traditionally fueled by mustard oil.

Kalash Placement: A Kalash (sacred pot) is filled with water, topped with a coconut and surrounded by mango leaves.

Aarti Recital: The puja begins with the Ganesh aarti, performed by circulating the puja thali clockwise and ringing a bell. After honouring Lord Ganesh, the Lakshmi aarti is similarly recited.

Deity and Diya Worship: Red vermillion (kumkum) and rice are applied to the foreheads of the deities, who are then adorned with flowers and offered prasad. This is also done to the diyas.

Asking for Blessings and Celebration: The puja concludes by seeking blessings from Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi. Diyas are placed around the home, in outdoor areas and on the rangolis. Celebrations involve visiting loved ones, sharing sweets, exchanging gifts, and for those who choose, lighting eco-friendly fireworks.

The uniforms were forgone and we dressed up in colourful ethnic wear. Some of us would even put in more effort and dress up as deities! Diwali celebration in school was all about burning crackers, lighting diyas, making rangolis and chasing away the darkness from one’s life.

Diwali House Gatherings

Diwali now is celebrated in a much different way. While the burning of diyas, dressing up and joining for the Lakshmi Puja is still majorly done but burning of crackers is significantly reduced due to environmental concerns. People have mostly opted for either not burning crackers or burning green crackers. Let us now see how Diwali is celebrated across the country.

North India

In places such as Ayodhya and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, the Diwali Festival 2024 will be celebrated more enthusiastically and vibrantly than in any other North Indian city. The Golden Temple is decorated with thousands of earthen lamps and langer (free food) and prasad are also organized for the devotees.

East India

Even competitions to award the best imaginative effigy are held.

South India

Narak Chaturdashi (that’s actually Choti Diwali in the northern states) is the most important day in the Diwali Festival 2024 celebration in the southern states of India. In Tamil Nadu, people begin their day by taking an oil bath before sunrise and performing various rituals like lighting the kuthi vilaku (lamp) and offering ‘naivedyam’ (food) to deities.

Significance of Visakha Utsav

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and the Vishakhapatnam Metropolitan region Development Authority organise Visakha Utsav every year to celebrate the unique culture and traditions of the South Indian state.
Rama Krishna Beach

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and the Vishakhapatnam Metropolitan region Development Authority organise Visakha Utsav every year to celebrate the unique culture and traditions of the South Indian state.

The first time Visakha Utsav was conducted in the year 1997 to promote tourism and show the world a short glimpse of AP’s cultural heritage. The event aims to show tourists and visitors the different traditional rituals, dance forms, art, music, local handicrafts, and cuisines and also promote water sports seeing how Vishakapatnam has several beaches. Until the year 2000, the tourism revenue was not up to the mark, at least not as much as the Government had expected when they first thought about the Utsav.

But word of mouth spread pretty quickly and many people from across the world attend Visakha Utsav now. The magnificence of the event also increased with the increase in the number of people attending the event each year.

The Government wants to promote the work of local artisans, and encourage them to bring their masterpieces in front of the public eye! This will provide good income for the talented artists and also improve their morale!

While Visakha Utsav is a good opportunity for promoting the AP state tourism revenue, for visitors, it is a grand celebration with unlimited entertainment. This event is the perfect place to let your hair loose and enjoy the vibrant and scintillating atmosphere with your friends and family. While tasting sizzling hot cuisines from the food stalls, you can relax to the sound of the splashing waves against the shore.

What is the Losar Festival?

Losar is the Tibetan New Year when all the Buddhist communities from the region will gather to welcome a new Lunar year.
Celebratory Dance at Losar Festival

Losar is the Tibetan New Year when all the Buddhist communities from the region will gather to welcome a new Lunar year. The Lunar Calendar for 2024 will begin on the day people celebrate Losar Festival 2024. If we take the literal meaning of the word, ‘sar’ implies ‘year’ and lo implies ‘new’. The families come together, attend the festivities in the monasteries, offer heartfelt prayers and ask for a prosperous year ahead. It is prominently celebrated in the Himalayan region in India where Tibetan Buddhism is practiced. The Ladakh monasteries, which are otherwise silent and peaceful, will welcome the new lunar year with traditional dances, melodious music, ancestral rituals and more!

Where is the Losar Festival Celebrated?

The first and foremost thing to note is that Losar Festival 2024 is important to the Tibetan Buddhist community. So, wherever these Tibetan Buddhism followers are, the festival will be celebrated with vigour and enthusiasm. They will leave no stone unturned to make the few days as memorable as possible.

Losar is celebrated grandly in the Ladakh Monasteries and the surrounding regions.

In India, Losar is celebrated grandly in the Ladakh Monasteries and the surrounding regions. The monks decorate the holy places of knowledge, the Monasteries, with colourful religious banners, there will be glorious street lights, and people sing spiritual songs and engage in congratulating each other for embracing life in a positive way. Apart from the Leh-Ladakh region, Losar festival 2024 will also be celebrated in Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Darjeeling.

History of Losar

The practice of celebrating Losar was once mainly focused on welcoming a new harvest season and thanking the Gods for blessing everyone with good food and life
Horse Stunts at Losar Festival

The practice of celebrating Losar was once mainly focused on welcoming a new harvest season and thanking the Gods for blessing everyone with good food and life. It was in the 17th Century when the 9th Tibetan King Pude Gungyal introduced the Losar festival to the Tibetan communities. The Tibetan Buddhists celebrate the Bon Festival which is their indigenous way of welcoming a new year with prayers, celebrations, and burning incense sticks in large numbers. They believed that the practice drives away evil and negative energy and their prayers will invite devotional presence into their houses.

King Pude Gungyal brought together the Bon and Losar festivals. Along with welcoming the new Lunar Year, people also started anticipating the spring season, thanking nature for a good harvest and treating crops as a part of the family.

The preparations to welcome the Lunar New Year start way before the actual date of the Losar Festival. You will know more about this as you keep reading this blog.

Significance of the Tibetan New Year Celebrations

The main reason to celebrate the Losar Festival 2024 is to forget the past and welcome a future that can decide which path your life will take. This is the time when people drive away the negativities from their lives – both from the house and their minds. A complete cleansing will remove whatever evil energies are lingering in their surroundings. By offering prayers and indulging in traditional rituals, they are tuning their mind to think positively and also attracting wealth and success into their houses. There is no place for sorrow or worries.

Moreover, the Losar Festival 2024 is all about thanking Mother Nature for being so selfless and offering food and harvest in abundance.
Crowd enjoying the Losar Festival

Moreover, the Losar Festival 2024 is all about thanking Mother Nature for being so selfless and offering food and harvest in abundance. Seeing how the Losar Festival always falls at the end of the winter season, people come together to cordially invite the glorious spring season. They are looking forward to the fresh burst of greenery that the season gets along with it. It won’t be wrong to say that the Losar Festival 2024 will be offering the people of the Himalayan region a chance to get closer to nature.

Important Dates of the Losar Festival 2024

Losar Festival 2024 is not just a one-day event where people gather, enjoy, and disperse. In regions like Ladakh and other northeastern states, at least 15 days are declared as annual holidays so that people can celebrate Losar Tibetan New Year properly.

This year, Losar Festival 2024 is going to fall on February 10th.
Traditional Attires of People at Losar Festival

This year, Losar Festival 2024 is going to fall on February 10th. So, you can expect the northeast and Ladakh regions to be involved in the festivities till February 25th. However, you must know that the celebrations start two days before the actual dates of the Losar Festival 2024. From February 8th, people will be fully immersed in preparing for the arrival of the Tibetan New Lunar Year. These two days, February 8th and 9th,  along with the actual day of Losar, February 10th, are of great importance and can be considered the ‘Big Three’ days of the event.

Let us tell you what happens on each of these days and the significance of the activities.

Three-Day Schedule of the Losar Festival

Lama Losar – Day 1 of the Festival

Lama Losar is going to fall on February 8th during the Losar Festival 2024. This is the day when people of the Tibetan Buddhist communities will start to clean their houses, get rid of any of the old items, and cleanse the prayer rooms. Later, they prepare a special noodle dish called the ‘Gu-Thuk’ and feast on it. People celebrating the festival also go to the monasteries, seek blessings from the lamas  (spiritual leader who takes care of the monasteries and leads the monks) and spend some quiet time meditating. They also sing hymns and pray for a good life. The people who visit monasteries will be offered Changkoi which is made out of Chhaang, a Tibetan alcoholic beverage made from rice.

Gyalpo Losar or King’s Losar – Day 2 of the Festival

King’s Losar is considered to be the last day of the previous Tibetan Lunar Calendar. This means that February 9th is the day the 2023 Lunar calendar will come to an end. On this special day, people offer prayers in the monasteries, perform traditional rituals and shrug off the worries and tensions of the past. As a token of respect and admiration, they also offer gifts to monks in the monasteries. The monks will also perform cleansing rituals and a ‘deity pooja’ to invoke the blessings of the Gods. One of the most interesting things that will happen on this day is the burning of firecrackers and fire torches at night! People believe that the brightness and elegance of these firecrackers will scare away evil spirits.

Choe Kyong Losar or Losar Festival – Day 3

On the day of the Losar Festival 2024, people in all households will wake up early in the morning and dress up in new attires. Everything that was old in the house will already be discarded on Day – 1. The married women in the house will wake up before sunrise, go to the nearby rivers and fetch their first bucket of water. It is believed that this will bring good luck and happiness into the house. Before they step out to enjoy the festivities, believers will place some water and offerings on their porch or doorstep to attract a good harvest in the 2024 lunar year.

It is believed that this happiness will last the entire year. Under any circumstances, people do not cry, whine or think of negative things during the Losar Festival.
Monks celebrating Losar Festival

It is important to have a family reunion on this day and enjoy a good dinner together. People also exchange gifts and cook for each other. This will keep the atmosphere in the house lively and positive. It is believed that this happiness will last the entire year. Under any circumstances, people do not cry, whine or think of negative things during the Losar Festival.

The festival will last for a total of 15 days when relatives visit each others’ houses, offer prayers in monasteries, and there is a lot of dance and music, of course!

Main Highlight of Losar Tibetan New Year

The main highlight of Losar Tibetan New Year is the Sand Mandalas. These are extravagant, intricate designs that are made of sand and the detailing is so precise! The monks make these mandalas from different coloured sands and you will find them in all monasteries during Losar Festival 2024. The mandalas signify life and its journey.

The main highlight of Losar Tibetan New Year is the Sand Mandalas.

How, you say?

The monks take several days to make these mandalas. The mandalas are kept around for 15 days and ceremoniously disintegrated once the festival comes to an end. This signifies the cycle of life – the efforts to bring life to this planet, nourishing it, watching it grow and eventually understanding that all good things come to an end. The purpose is served.

How To Reach Ladakh?

To witness the glory of the Losar Festival 2024, you will have to come to Ladakh.
Picturesque View of Ladakh

To witness the glory of the Losar Festival 2024, you will have to come to Ladakh. This is where all of the monasteries will actively celebrate the annual festival. This is how you can reach Ladakh.

By Air

Taking a flight is one of the best ways to reach Ladakh. The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. This is about 4 km away from Ladakh and you can easily find taxi services to reach Ladakh. The airport is also well-connected with other cities like Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and more. People travelling from the South can reach Chandigarh first, halt and then take a flight to Leh from here.

While you are in Chandigarh, book your short stay at Treebo Hotels in Chandigarh for a comfortable experience.

By Rail

There are no direct trains to Leh or Ladakh seeing how these two places are at a higher elevation. You will have to reach Tawi town in Jammu first and then take a taxi or JKSRTC bus to reach Ladakh. The distance between the two places is about 700km and it takes at least 15 hours owing to the rough and challenging roads leading to Ladakh.

By Road

Road trips to Ladakh are absolutely stunning and you can enjoy the views of snow-laden mountains while feeling the chilled breeze brush your hair. The best way to reach Ladakh by road would be to reach Delhi first. From here, you can take any of these five spectacular routes.

  1. Delhi – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh – Ladakh
  2. Delhi – Kinnaur – Kaza – Keylong – Sarchu – Leh – Ladakh
  3. Delhi – Manali – Sarchu – Leh – Ladakh
  4. Delhi – Dalhousie – Sar Pass – Keylong – Sarchu – Leh – Ladakh

The Losar Festival 2024 is happening in the month of February when the snow is thick and prominent. You will have to see which of the routes are blocked, permits needed to travel and more before starting your journey.

The Losar Festival 2024 is fascinating, and peaceful and gives you a sense of joy that you will forever cherish. But also remember that February is one of the coldest months in the Ladakh region. Pack some good woollens to combat the chill and also keep some medicines handy for emergency situations. Once you have everything checked and planned, grab your bags and go explore the most vibrant festival of the Tibetan Buddhists!

What is the Hornbill Festival?

Hornbill Festival Performance

The world has changed and technological developments have made our lives better. Some of the older customs and beliefs are forgotten to pave the way for newer innovations. But that is not how things work in Nagaland. The people of the Naga tribe along with the other sub-tribes go to great efforts to preserve their morals, customs, beliefs and traditional practices. The Hornbill Festival is celebrated to remind each other of these traditional beliefs and bask in the glory of their excellence.

The people of the tribes dress up in their native attires, women cook their signature cuisines, and the men deck up with their spears, armoury, and headgear. Do you know? The men had to fight, compete and win to get their hands on the headgear or the weapons which are considered to be a man’s pride.

People come out to dance, sing the hymns that narrate the story of the land, eat and drink together. The festival gets its name from the bird, the Great Indian Hornbill, which is revered by the people of the Naga tribe. Its colourful feathers and long beak are considered to be symbols of diversity, grandeur and wealth. The festival is so bright and vibrant that the whole land transforms into an impressive kaleidoscope! The youth come forward to perform, entertain and showcase their distinct talents.

Where is the Hornbill Festival celebrated?

The Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is celebrated in the Kisama Heritage Village, Kohima which is about 5km from Nagaland. This is a small place where a large number of Naga tribal people live and most of the events are centered here. However, you will need a permit to come here and we will discuss all about it in the next section.

The Great Indian Hornbill is greatly respected by the native Naga tribe. In the olden days, the feathers of this bird’s plumage were used to decorate the headgear of the warriors. It is a matter of pride and honour. Nagas used to hunt the birds extensively which almost led to their extinction. The government tried to talk them out of it but they were not ready to overlook their customs.

However, when they noticed that the birds were really disappearing in large numbers, the hunting decreased significantly. In 2000, the organisation of the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland began and people began singing songs and praises of the majestic bird during the event.
