Manhole fires shut down area near Massachusetts General Hospital https://www.bostonherald.com/2020/03/24/mbta-red-line-trains-bypassing-charles-mgh-due-to-manhole-fire/ https://www.bostonherald.com/2020/03/24/mbta-red-line-trains-bypassing-charles-mgh-due-to-manhole-fire/#respond Tue, 24 Mar 2020 19:43:43 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=1951933 Multiple manhole fires shut down roads near the Longfellow Bridge and Massachusetts General Hospital and forced MBTA Red Line trains to bypass the Charles/MGH stop for several hours Tuesday.

The Boston Fire Department said it received a call for smoke coming out of multiple manholes at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

“There have been multiple explosions, the ground around the manhole has buckled,” the fire department wrote, tweeting photos of a firefighter hosing down one of the manholes.

Both fire and ice were used to control the flames, the department said, adding that first responders are working with utility company Eversource. Crews were also checking nearby buildings for any signs of smoke or fire. MGH and the surrounding buildings were placed under a brief shelter in place, which was lifted at about 5:20 p.m. The fire department tweeted at 5:32 p.m. that the fires were extinguished and no injuries were reported.

MBTA trains were bypassing the Charles/MGH station on the Red Line and the T was running shuttle buses on that portion of the route due to the fires, the transit agency said.

“Due to a working manhole fire in the area, all trains are temporarily bypassing Charles/MGH station,” the MBTA tweeted at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Service resumed later in the afternoon.

Cambridge Street was closed from Blossom Street to Charles Circle as crews worked to put out the flames. The Longfellow Bridge heading inbound into Boston from Cambridge was also closed, as was the ramp from Storrow Drive to Charles Circle, the Boston Transportation Department said.

‘It was crazy’: At least 2 hurt in collision between scooter, truck in South Boston https://www.bostonherald.com/2018/06/15/it-was-crazy-at-least-2-hurt-in-collision-between-scooter-truck-in-south-boston/ https://www.bostonherald.com/2018/06/15/it-was-crazy-at-least-2-hurt-in-collision-between-scooter-truck-in-south-boston/#respond Fri, 15 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com?p=46882&preview_id=46882 At least two people were injured when a scooter collided with a truck in South Boston last night.

Police said a call came in at 8:52 p.m. for the accident on East Eighth Street and Patterson Way.

Witnesses say the victims were traveling up Patterson Way when the accident occurred.

“I just heard the noise, like a big bang,” said Wendy Arias, 45, of South Boston. “We saw the two girls on the floor.”

“All I seen is two kids flying and heard a big bang,” said Kristen Connolly, 39, of South Boston. “One of the helmets went flying. The other one, on her belly, wasn’t breathing or anything. It was crazy.”

About 1,400 march in protest around Boston https://www.bostonherald.com/2014/11/26/about-1400-march-in-protest-around-boston/ https://www.bostonherald.com/2014/11/26/about-1400-march-in-protest-around-boston/#respond Wed, 26 Nov 2014 06:15:00 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/2014/11/26/about-1400-march-in-protest-around-boston/ Protesters have broken up into packs around the city after police turned back about 1,400 from marching onto Interstate 93 tonight near the Mass Ave Connector.

One pack spilled onto both sides of Mass Ave near the symphony area as another pack was heading to the Mass Pike near Clarendon Street where police report they have headed them off.

Some other protesters are now said to be heading to the Kneeland Street area while more are at South Station.

Earlier, state police joined in the "soft" barricade as cops on bicycles helped keep the crowd from walking onto the Southeast Expressway. Prisoners at the South Bay Correctional facility were seen banging on the windows as the crowd locked arms at the police line. Some in the crowd chanted "You back up!" to police manning the line.

Some of the protesters have been taken into custody by police and face disturbing the peace charges. Police did not have a count of those arrested late tonight, but Herald staffers saw a number of people taken into custody.

The march first made its way along Harrison Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard as people chanted "No justice, No peace" and "Hands up, don't shoot" as they protested last night's grand jury decision in Ferguson, Mo.

The Missouri grand jury did not return any charges — from murder to involuntary manslaughter — against Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson in the Aug. 9 shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

The protests in Boston are being mirrored in cities across the nation.

Police reported earlier tonight the Hub crowd was peaceful with "no incidents reported" but they continue to try to shut down highways and city streets in a cat and mouse game with cops tonight.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and other officials, clergy, and community leaders released a joint statement tonight in anticipation of a demonstration.

"Boston is a City rooted proudly in the spirit of freedom and strength. We strive to be a City where our residents can express themselves, and to engage in meaningful discussion and efforts to improve the most difficult issues in our society. …

"We echo the sentiment of community leaders, elected officials, and clergy nationwide, calling for unity and peaceful demonstrations, and encouraging all to work together to create real, lasting change. Boston can continue a proud tradition of leadership and use this moment as an opportunity to recommit ourselves to uniting for a better Boston."

`Neighborhood shook’ in Dorchester explosion, fire https://www.bostonherald.com/2014/04/17/neighborhood-shook-in-dorchester-explosion-fire/ https://www.bostonherald.com/2014/04/17/neighborhood-shook-in-dorchester-explosion-fire/#respond Thu, 17 Apr 2014 05:30:00 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/2014/04/17/neighborhood-shook-in-dorchester-explosion-fire/ Boston firefighters are battling a suspected gas explosion that blew a multi-family house apart and sparked a three-alarm fire in Dorchester tonight, with 11 people transported to the hospital, according to officials and a witness.

Jacqueline Jones, who lives two house away, described a blast that shook the street. “I was in my room. Everything in the house just shook. The whole neighborhood shook. I thought my house was hit by a car.

“But then I went outside and everything was in flames. The whole house was engulfed,” Jones said.

The house was still standing, with large holes blown in the walls. A door was also blown across the street, fire officials report.

Firefighters evacuated the building and began pumping water in through the gaping holes and the windows.

One eyewitness on Hansborough Street told the Herald she saw the house on her street “burst into flames” at about 9:20 p.m. She said police and fire officials were instructing neighbors to evacuate the area as a precaution.

Jones said she talked to a resident of the exploded house, and he said just before it went, he smelled gas and then, “There was a loud boom.”

A National Grid spokeswoman said the company, which supplies gas to the area, was investigating but had not confirmed a gas leak.

Before firefighters and medics arrived, Jones helped comfort an elderly woman who was bleeding and burned. Fire officials said that two elderly people were in serious condition.

Boston Fire reported the blaze and partial collapse of the two-and-a-half story house at 27 Hansborough St., near Harvard Street and Blue Hill Avenue, apparently was caused by some “type of explosion.”

Fire Commissioner John Hasson said there were eight people in the building and all were accounted for. Two were in serious condition and six others had injuries ranging from scratches to burns.

When firefighters arrived, the house was “knocked off its foundation,” Hasson said.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh was on the scene shortly after firefighters arrived.

“These things keep on happening. It’s sad,” Walsh said, referring to a series of recent serious fires, including the Back Bay fire that killed two firefighters and another that gutted two houses in East Boston. “I think everybody here will be OK. I heard it was a gas explosion, but they will investigate that. Right now, what’s important is getting everyone safe.”

“It sounded like a bomb went off right next to my house,” said Santos Jones, who lives next door. “I will never forget that sound. … It sounded like an asteroid hit our roof.”

Jacqueline Jones, who lives two houses away from the Hans-?borough Street blast, described an explosion that shook the street. “I was in my room. ?Everything in the house just shook. The whole neighborhood shook. I thought my house was hit by a car.

Carole Duvert had just arrived home from work and was inside her house when the blast rocked her street.

“Boom! And then the house just (shook),” she said. She said she and her three kids ran outside. She saw the neighboring house on fire with white smoke coming out of it. She and other neighbors were evacuated and were expected to spend the night in a shelter.
