The summer of heavy rain, tropical humidity and severe storms is expected to continue on Tuesday, as local meteorologists warn that a “brief tornado or waterspout” will be possible.

The National Weather Service has issued an alert that there will be a risk for thunderstorms Tuesday morning, which could turn severe with torrential downpours — and spark street flooding during the morning commute.

After a break in the action, another round of storms will be possible in the afternoon.

“Heavy rainfall, isolated damaging winds, and we cannot rule out a brief tornado or waterspout,” the National Weather Service’s Boston office tweeted ahead of Tuesday.

“Isolated damaging wind gusts are the most likely hazard with storms that become severe,” NWS Boston added in a message.

A few tornadoes have hit the region throughout this chaotic summer. The tornado and waterspout risk on Tuesday will be in the morning round of storms.

“It’s going to be quite muggy out there,” Alan Dunham, meteorologist with NWS Boston, told the Herald.

Temps should be in the 80s, with tropical dewpoints in the 70s.

Meanwhile, dangerous rip currents are expected along the coast on Tuesday. The rip current threat will be for Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, the South Coast, and the North Shore.

“Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water,” the National Weather Service wrote in an alert. “Swim near a lifeguard.

“If caught in a rip current, relax and float,” NWS added. “Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.”

After the active day of weather on Tuesday, things should dry out on Wednesday. Temps are expected to be in the 80s during the pick of the week.

“Wednesday is looking nice,” Dunham said.

Most of Thursday should also remain dry before a chance for showers late in the day. Heavy downpours will be possible. Again, temps will be in the 80s.

Friday and Saturday are also expected to be dry in the 80s.

“Dewpoints finally drop by Saturday morning, leading to some early fall like temperatures, 50s across the interior, to start the day,” the NWS forecast discussion reads. “Summer lovers will be glad to hear that even with the cool start to the day, temperatures rebound into the 80s all weekend.”
