A fire Monday afternoon ripped through three Mattapan homes on Irma Street, the Boston Fire Department reported.

The three-alarm blaze burned heavily through 20 Irma St., an occupied three-family building in Mattapan, and spread to the adjacent buildings at 16 Irma St. and 24 Irma St., the department tweeted at 2:47 p.m.

A video from the department at that time showed visible roaring fire consuming all three floors of the building.

By 3:05 p.m., the department tweeted, “heavy fire knocked down (and) companies continue to continue to chase hot spots.” Images showed a charred building still smoking.

The department has not yet reported the status of the building occupants, though it did say two birds were rescued from one of the apartments.
