The World Cancer Day campaign is to bring people together to create a world, where we look beyond the disease and see a patient as a human being first. The focus on creating people-centric care is to strengthen the community as a whole to join hands and form a better healthcare system.

History of World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day was started in the year 2000 by The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), a global network of over 1,000 cancer-related organisations. It was organised to spread global awareness about cancer and its impact and to encourage action to reduce the burden of cancer across the world. The first World Cancer Day was celebrated on 4th February 2005, when the UICC members adopted the World Cancer Declaration, which includes specific goals to reduce the global impact of cancer. It further includes increasing access to prevent cancer, its early detection, treatment and care. Since then, participation in the day through various activities including public health campaigns and fundraisers has increased across the world.

Here are some of the ways to contribute to the cause, especially on World Cancer Day:

  • Spread Awareness: In most cases, the deaths are caused by the late diagnosis of cancer. Spreading awareness about the early signs, risk factors and preventive strategies can help to lower the death rate. You can use various methods to raise your voice for the cause. Start with encouraging your loved ones to do self-examination and regular screening.
  • Clear the Misunderstanding about the Disease: People associate various myths with cancer and fear the disease. To clear these misunderstandings and break the barriers of fear, campaigns encouraging open discussions and promoting empathy, are organised on World Cancer Day. You can initiate a conversation on social media or community groups about the facts busting the myths related and encouraging people towards a healthy lifestyle. Share articles, videos and posts on the importance of cancer prevention and early detection through social media or you can even organise community campaigns in the banquet halls in the nearby hotels in your locality.
  • Contribute to the Fund Raising Campaigns: The motive of World Cancer Day is not just limited to awareness campaigns through debates and speeches but it calls on government, healthcare providers and global organisations to prioritise cancer care and fund the research. The day offers a platform for advocating and implementing stronger cancer prevention policies, equal access to treatment and increasing funds for cancer research. Fundraisers are a crucial part of supporting cancer research and patient care. The money raised may be used for research, treatment and support services to contribute to the ongoing fight against cancer. You can participate in charity runs, walks or fundraisers organised by various cancer research organisations. You can also donate to your nearby cancer charity organisations and cancer research organisations. Moreover, you can also take the initiative to host fundraising events in your community.
  • Volunteer for the Cancer Support Campaigns: Contributing your time for the cause can make a significant difference for lives affected by cancer. You can volunteer with your emotional support, helping with daily tasks or assisting in cancer care facilities. You can look out for local cancer support centres, hospitals or charitable organisations.
  • Brings the World Together: The day focuses on the collective efforts to fight against cancer by encouraging countries, organisations and individuals to work together for the cause. The worldwide collective efforts will impact cancer-related deaths and enhance the quality of life of the affected ones.
  • Motivate People Towards a Healthy Lifestyle: A healthier lifestyle not only can be helpful in the prevention of certain types of cancer but can also be a great factor in improving cancer patient’s health. You can encourage your family and friends to follow a healthy lifestyle to lower their risk of getting cancer. Motivate them to eat a nutritious and balanced diet, exercise and avoid excessive drinking and consumption of tobacco. Lead them with an example by yourself getting engaged in physical activities such as walking, running or performing yoga asanas. Raise awareness about the adverse effects of smoking and alcohol abuse by organising drives in your locality.
  • Participate and Organise Blood Donation Drives: Donating blood is crucial for cancer patients as treatments like chemotherapy lead to a decreased blood count. Through donating blood or organising blood donation drives you can contribute to providing patients with this life-saving resource. Different charitable organisations organise blood camps, especially on World Cancer Day. You can not only donate blood there but also encourage your near ones to join the initiative and donate blood.

Let’s learn more about the festival, timings, significance, rituals. and how different regions of the country celebrate the festival.

Date and Timings of Vasant Panchami 2025

Vasant Panchami is celebrated forty days before the spring as the season’s transition period is 40 days. According to the Hindu lunar calendar the Vasant Panchami occurs on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha in Magha month (January/ February). This year the festival will be celebrated on Sunday, 2nd February, 2025.

Devotees perform Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami.

The duration of Vasant Panchami is 5 hours 26 minutes which will start at 07:09 AM till 12:35 PM. Panchami Tithi begins at 09:14 AM on 2nd February and ends at 06:52 AM on 3rd February.

Significance of Vasant Panchami

Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, art, music, science and technology is worshipped on Vasant Panchami. The deity symbolises creative energy and power in all its forms. Moreover, the agricultural cycle plays a significant role during the Vasant Panchami. During the Magha month, the fields are filled with yellow mustard flowers which are associated with the favourite colour of the Goddess Saraswati. For a similar reason, people dress in yellow-coloured sarees, shirts and accessories, and prepare yellow-coloured snacks and sweets. The most common food item prepared during the festival is yellow-coloured rice.

The festival of Vasant Panchami is also known as “Haate-Khori”, “Vidya-Arambha” or “Khadi-Chaun”. Parents encourage their children of four to five years of age to start learning or writing their first words on this day. The Goddess Saraswati temples are decorated the previous day and people come together on Vasant Panchami for a feast to mark the celebrations. The educational institutions also celebrate the festival by dressing up the Goddess Saraswati idol in yellow-coloured clothes and reciting poetic and musical performances to seek the blessings of the Goddess.

A legend related to Vasant Panchami is based on the Hindu god of love Kamadeva (also known as Madana), who was reborn as Krishna’s and Rukmani’s son Pradyumna (this is why Vasant Panchami is also known as “Madana Panchami”). Kamadeva is known to awaken carnal desires among humans. It is believed that once on this day, the Seers (Rishis) approached Kama to wake up Shiva from his Yogic meditation. These seers were supporting Parvati who was doing a penance at that time to get Shiva as her husband. They wanted Kama’s help to bring Shiva back from his meditation to worldly desires. Kama agreed and shot arrows made of flowers and bees at Shiva from his heavenly bow of sugarcane, in order to arouse him and to pay attention to Parvati. Lord Shiva awakened from his meditation and opened his third eye, a fireball was then directed towards Kama. Kama, the Lord of desires was burnt to ashes. To remember his deed pf Kamadeva, Hindus celebrate this day as Madana Panchami.

How Different Parts of India Celebrate Vasant Panchami?

  • Eastern India: In Eastern states like West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Bihar, people visit Saraswati temples or worship Goddess Saraswati at home by performing Saraswati Puja. In West Bengal, it’s one of the major festivals for Bengali Hindus and is observed by many households and educational institutions. The educational institutions arrange Saraswati Puja for the students on their premises. The Goddess is worshipped with Bengal quince leaves, marigolds, Palash and Guldaudi flowers and Sandal paste. Similar to Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja is also celebrated as a community festival where people come together, build Pandals in their localities and install the idol of Goddess Saraswati. To follow the tradition, devotees play music on the gramophone to appease and get the blessings of the Goddess of wisdom and knowledge. In Odisha, the festival is celebrated as Basanta Panchami/Sri Panchami /Saraswati Puja. Schools and colleges across the state organise Homs and Yagnas also known as fire rituals.
  • Central India: In Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, people worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati during this day, and offer mango flowers to the deities. To celebrate the day, devotees dress in yellow and white coloured clothes, sing, dance, play musical instruments, decorate their homes with yellow flowers and eat sweet dishes. Moreover, the day marks the establishment of the Deo-Sun Temple in Aurangabad. The statues are washed and the old red clothes on them are replaced with the new ones on Basant Panchami. By staying at one of the hotels in Aurangabad, you can visit this temple and enjoy its festivities.
  • South India: The festival is celebrated in some of the southern states such as Andhra Pradesh as Sri Panchami where “Sri” refers to Goddess Saraswati. The celebrations are organised in the schools and colleges and students dressed in vibrant colours bring traditional cakes as offerings to the Goddess.
  • Western India: In Gujarat, Vasant Panchami is associated with the emotions of love and emotional anticipation. People in the state worship Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha on this day by singing songs about Krishna’s pranks with Radha, considered to mirror Kama-Rati. People also prepare bouquets and garlands of flowers set with mango leaves, as a gift and dress in saffron, pink or yellow and visit each other’s homes. In Rajasthan, it is customary for people to wear jasmine garlands. In Maharashtra, newly married couples wear yellow dresses, visit a temple and offer prayers on the first Basant Panchami after the wedding.
  • Northern India: In north India, the festival is celebrated to mark the beginning of the spring season. People offer yellow flowers to Goddess Saraswati on the auspicious day of Vasant Panchami (Basant Panchami) as there is an abundance of blossomed mustard flowers and marigolds (Genda Phool). You can explore the various places to visit in Punjab and other northern states at this time of the year to enjoy the festivities in its regional form. In the Punjab region, Basant is celebrated as a seasonal festival by all faiths and is known as the Festival of Kites. Children buy dor (thread) and guddi or patang (kites) for flying kites. The people wear yellow clothes and eat yellow rice to emulate the yellow mustard (sarson) flower field. In Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, in addition to Saraswati Puja, people worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati (as the mother earth) and agricultural products. People eat yellow rice and wear yellow clothes. People also buy stationery and gift these items to their loved ones.

In the diverse land of India, you come across multiple events and festivals signifying the country’s glorious past. From mythological beliefs to religious scenarios, many days in a Hindu calendar are worth knowing! One such beautiful day is the day of Jaya Ekadashi. Did you know it falls on the 11th day of Shukla Paksha (waxing moon)? That’s when devotees gather and celebrate the day with utmost devotion and love.

Considering the Hindu scriptures, Jaya Ekadashi falls in the auspicious month of Magh. The sacred Hindu month generally falls between January and February. You get an opportunity to dedicate this divine day to spiritual practices and self-discipline. If you wish to visit different temples, it is best to book affordable Treebo hotels for a comfortable stay.

Jaya Ekadashi has different names from region to region. It is also known as Vrat Ekadashi, as females observe a fast (vart) on this day. Bhoomi Ekadashi is another name emphasising this day’s connection with the earth. As it falls in the month of Magh on the Shukla day, it is also known as Magha Shukla Ekadashi. The day falls close to the Bhishma Panchaka; hence it gets the name Bhishma Ekadashi too.

Jaya Ekadashi 2025: Dates and Timings To Know

For most Hindu festivals and important days, a panchang (Hindu calendar) is used. For the year 2025, Jaya Ekadashi Tithi (date) of Shukla Paksha of Magh month starts on 7th February at 9:26 pm. Jaya Ekadashi continues on 8th February till 8:15 pm. Considering the timings, devotees can worship the lord on the 8th of February. As per the timings, you need to start the fast from the 7th of February and consume food after 8:15 pm on the 8th of February.

Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Most auspicious days dedicated to gods and goddesses have different stories attached to their significance. It is interesting that you get to discover the mythologies in multiple ways through simplistic celebrations. One such day is Jaya Ekadashi. According to the legend, this story begins in the heavenly abode. Gods and goddesses once resided in the beautiful forests and lush greenery of heaven. Everyone was dedicated to their roles and responsibilities towards maintaining the beauty of their home.

Malyavan and Pushpavati’s Love

The heaven consisted of Gandharvas, who were great musicians and Apsaras, who were celestial dancers. Lord Indra was the king of the gods and he ruled the heavens. Once a grand celebration was organised where Gandharvas and Apsaras performed gracefully. Malyavan was one of the highly talented musicians who adored an Apsara named Pushpavati. While performing, he could not concentrate on his art and kept falling in love with Pushpavati. Both had eye-to-eye contact and they were lost in love.

Lord Indra’s Curse

Lord Indra’s court was all about peace and perfection. Due to their love, both artistic souls were distracted, leading to a massive disturbance in the performance. As soon as Lord Indra noticed the fault of the two performers, he was in a rage. They were out of focus, leading to a complete imbalance in dance and music. This incident infuriated Lord Indra and he cursed the two.

“You have disrespected this sacred gathering by indulging in desires. As punishment, you shall be banished from Swargaloka and fall into the mortal world, where you will take the form of terrible demons!”

Due to their lack of discipline and Lord Indra’s curse, Malyavan and Pushpavati lost their celestial forms. They lost everything they had. Did you know what happened next? They fell from heaven onto the forest grounds of the mortal world.

Malyavan and Pushpavati’s Life of Misery

According to the curse, Malyavan and Pushpavati turned into dangerous demons who led a miserable life. They did not have the basic facilities required for a healthy life. From the comfort of heaven, they wandered in the eerie forests filled with darkness. To add to their sadness, they did not have any food and suffered from hunger and thirst. They had to bear extreme weather conditions with no support from anyone. Living such a miserable life made them realise their mistake. They constantly missed being in their celestial forms and prayed for redemption. Despite being in the bodies of demons, all they longed for was their life back in the Swargalok.

Jaya Ekadashi: The Day That Changed Their Lives

As they roamed the forest, it happened to be the day of Jaya Ekadashi. It was the Shukla Paksha in the month of Magh. Interestingly, Pushpavati and Malyavan did not know its importance while wandering in the forests. On that specific day, they could not find any food or water.

Due to extreme hunger and thirst, they could not even sleep at night. The entire night they remembered their days in heaven and kept praying for relief from the vulnerable life in the forests. As the day was all about fasting, staying awake and praying to the lord, both unknowingly observed the Jaya Ekadashi vrat.

Lord Vishnu’s Grace and Liberation

It was the 12th day of Dwadashi when Lord Vishnu decided to appear in the forest. He was pleased by the unintentional fasting of Malyavan and Pushpavati. Their devotion and prayers made Lord Vishnu appear before them. It was the day of Jaya Ekadashi when their lives were changed. Lord Vishnu uttered his powerful words.

“Your suffering is now over. The power of Jaya Ekadashi has purified you. You are freed from Indra’s curse and you may now return to Swargaloka in your divine forms.”

Instantly after the blessing, Malyavan and Pushpavati lost their demon forms. They were transported back to heaven in their pure celestial bodies. As they ascended to heaven, they showcased utmost gratefulness to Lord Vishnu.

Significance of Jaya Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi Vrat is observed to please Lord Vishnu and gain his blessings on this auspicious day. The sage said that the king had his past karmas leading to this misfortune. The sage advised him to pray to Lord Surya and observe the Ratha Saptami fast. After listening to the advice, he decided to worship Lord Surya on the auspicious day. Hence, Yashovarma did everything possible on the day. He took a bath before sunrise, performed Surya namaskar, and also recited the Aditya Hridayam. He observed a fast and later was blessed with a healthy son.

After a few years, his son was severely sick, and no medicine could cure him. Another time, the sage advised the king to observe the Ratha Saptami vrat to cure his son. As soon as the king completed his fasting, his son miraculously regained health. It is believed that Lord Surya helped in removing ailments and granting a long life to his devotees. Even in today’s time, the vrat is known for curing human suffering and blessing devotees with great health.

3. Birth of Sage Agastya

You might be surprised to believe how the births of divine sages are also connected to the day of Ratha Saptami. The legend suggests that a long time ago there was an imbalance in the world. While the Himalayan region was heavily populated, the southern lands remained unexplored. Watching this, Lord Shiva decided that a great sage must be born in the region to spread wisdom.

That’s when Lord Surya took the ultimate responsibility to perform the task. A couple named Mitra and Varuna were blessed with sage Agastya. He was one of the greatest sages in Hindu tradition. As he grew up, Sage Agastya decided to travel towards south India and spread his Vedic knowledge. As his birth is linked to this divine day, it is also known for spiritual awakening. It is believed that worshipping Lord Surya on this day brings intelligence and clarity.

Festivities and special occasions in India are mostly governed by the lunar phases. Just like a full moon is considered auspicious, the Amawasya (no moon) has its significance. According to the Hindu calendar, there are 30 Amavas in a year, one of which is Mauni Amavas. Mauni means “of or for silence” and Amavaya means “no-moon day”.

Devotees worship lord Vishnu on Mauni Amavas.
Lord Vishnu

According to the Hindu calendar, Mauni Amavas occur on the no-moon day of the Maagha month (January/ February) when the sun and moon are in the Capricorn Zodiac Sign (Makara Rashi). Devotees observe a vow of silence (Maun Vrat) to cleanse their senses and souls and worship Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and the Sun god. The time is also considered auspicious to find peace and calmness and honour the ancestors, therefore you can organise ceremonies like Pitru Dosha puja, take a holy bath in the Ganga river, offer charity and perform prayers.

Let’s discuss more about the dates, timings, history, significance and rituals of Mauni Amavas:

Dates and Timings of Mauni Amavas

According to the Panchang (Hindu Calendar), the Amavas Tithi of Krishna Paksha of the Magh month will start at 7:35 PM on 28th January 2025 and will end at 6.05 PM on 29th January 2025. Therefore, according to Udaya Tithi, Mauni Amavas will be celebrated on 29th January 2025.

Visit Swami Veda Bharati's Ashram in Rishikesh on Mauni Amavas.

The day is considered auspicious for bathing in the rivers and donating at the pilgrimage places. Moreover, since the Maha Kumbh Mela is in Prayagraj from 13th January to 26th February this year, it makes 2025 Mauni Amavas even more auspicious as the third Amrit or Sahi Snan will also occur on the same day. You can explore the places to take a dip in Haridwar or in Uttar Pradesh to take a holy dip in the Ganga River. The Brahma Muhurta for bathing and donation will start from 5:25 AM to 6:18 AM and the Vijay Muhurata will start from 02.22 PM to 03:05 PM on Mauni Amavas.

Furthermore, the day is also considered auspicious to perform Siddhi Yoga which you can perform from morning till 09:22 PM on 29th January. It is believed that Lord Ganesha, the lord of Siddhi Yoga is to be worshipped on Mauni Amavas. You can also worship the ancestors and perform Tarpana, a ritual to offer water to the ancestors and the departed souls. People also perform ceremonies like pind daan, pitru dan and shradh and feed the Brahmins on this day to honour and seek their forgiveness.

History of Mauni Amavas

According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Manu, the Archetypal Man first appeared on the earth on Mauni Amavas. Manu married Shata-Roopa (She of a Hundred Beautiful Forms) and generated humankind. Therefore, the day is considered special to remember and honour our ancestors and those who came before us.

Worship and admire the sculpture of lord Shiva in Murudeshwar Temple on Mauni Amavas.
Sculpture of Lord Shiva in Murudeshwar Temple

People also pray to Lord Vishnu and observe a fast as it is believed that doing so will nullify any sins. Also, due to the celestial event of the Sun and the Moon being on the same zodiac, there is a significant impact on the emotions, mind and soul of every human being. To overcome the turbulent impact of the Mauni Amavas on their horoscopes, people worship Lord Shiva on the occasion.

Significance of Mauni Amavas

Maun in Mauni Amavas is associated with both silence and saints (muni). Therefore, devotees seek maun vrat on the day and seek the blessings of brahmins, sadhus and their gurus. People wake up early in the Brahma Muhurta, take holy baths, worship divine powers and ancestors and try spiritual cleansing by chanting and meditation. Taking a dip in the Holy Ganga River and at Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on this day holds significant importance in Hindu Sanatan Dharma.

Follow rituals on Mauni Amavas to worship the deities and honour the ancestors.
Ritauls on Mauni Amavas

Here are the major significances associated with Mauni Amavas.

  • Spiritual Cleansing: Mauni Amavas is associated with silence and inner reflection. On this day, the “maun vrat” or vow of silence is observed to purify thoughts and words. Another way of spiritual cleansing is taking a holy dip in the Ganga river. Also, since this is the best time to visit Haridwar, you can also book hotels in Haridwar or Prayagraj.
  • In case, you are unable to visit any of the Ganga ghats, you can add a few drops of Gangajal (holy water from the Ganga river) to your bathing water. According to Sanatan Dharma, the water of the Ganga is a nectar on Mauni Amavas. Bathing in the Ganga is believed to erase sins and attain salvation.
  • Pitru Tarpan: According to Hindu mythology, the ancestors come to meet their descendants on this day making it a perfect day to honour them. Rituals like tarpan, pind daan and shradh are performed to remember them, ask for forgiveness and seek their blessings.
  • New Beginnings: Since, Mauni Amavas falls at the beginning of spring, the day signifies fresh starts and renewal of spiritual journeys.

Therefore, the Mauni Amavas is all about self-growth, leaving the negatives behind, purification and seeking the blessings of the divine powers and ancestors for a new beginning.

Rituals To Be Followed on Mauni Amavas

Since the day has significance in spiritual cleansing, honouring the ancestors and marking the new beginning, there are some rituals devotees follow on this day to get the maximum benefits.

Take a holy dip in the Ganga river in Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar on Mauni Amavas.
Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar

Here are the rituals to be followed on Mauni Amavas:

  • Wake up early in the morning and start your day by taking a holy bath either on the Ganga Ghat or adding Gangajal to the bathing water.
  • Offer arghya to the Sun God after the holy bath.
  • Visit significant worship places like Haridwar and Prayagraj.
  • Light a lamp with ghee to honour the ancestors.
  • Observe a fast and remain silent which restrain you from false thoughts and cleanses the body and mind.
  • Perform ceremonies like pitru tarpan, pind daan and shraad.
  • Offer food and other donations to the Brahmins.
  • Feed crows, dogs, ants and cows to seek the blessings of ancestors.
  • Perform good deeds like reading the Bhagavad Gita, performing Gayatri jap during a hawan, and chanting prayers while performing religious rituals.
  • Engage yourself in calming activities like meditation for cleaning your mind and soul.
  • Additionally, if someone is affected by Kaal Sarpa Dosha, they can perform a special pooja to neutralise its harmful effects.

What Not to Do on Mauni Amavas

While we discussed various rituals to follow, there are also a few things to avoid during Mauni Amavas to bring in some positivity for the day. Here are those things:

  • For maximum spiritual cleansing, avoid lying and remain silent for as much time as you can.
  • Avoid being involved in arguments, quarrels and personal grudges to stay away from the negative impact of the occasion. Doing so will help calm the mind and spiritual contemplation.
  • Try to remain sattvic and avoid eating non-vegetarian food items.
  • Refrain from visiting cemeteries and crematoriums.
  • Avoid buying new items or starting a new venture.

Thus, Mauni Amavas holds great significance for spiritual cleansing, enlightenment and honouring the ancestors. Observing ‘ maun vrat’, worshipping Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Sun God and performing pitru tarpan in different forms helps to seek the blessings of the deities and ancestors. Even if you cannot remain silent throughout the day, it is suggested to refrain from speaking negative words and avoid indulging in any fights. Taking a holy dip in the Ganga River is also considered auspicious, so if you are planning to visit any of the holy places surrounded by the Ganga River, there are various Treebo Club hotels located near the Ganga ghats in Haridwar, Prayagraj and other locations.

According to the Hindu Calendar, there are various significant days dedicated to various gods and goddesses. One of the important days is Ekadashi dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It falls on the 11th day of every month according to the lunar calendar and each month has two Ekadashis. One Ekadashi falls on Krishna Paksha and the other on Shukla Paksha. Out of 24 Ekadashis (26 during the Hindu leap year), Shattila Ekadashi is celebrated on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Magh (usually the February month). The day is also known as Papharni Vrat and devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna by observing a fast to get rid of their sins and attain Moksha (the cycle of birth and death).

Shattila Ekadashi is celebrated to worship lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi

Shattila Ekadashi is known by different names including Shat-Tila Ekadashi, Stilla Ekadashi, Sattila Ekadashi, Magh Krishna Ekadashi and Tilda Ekadashi. As these names suggest, Til (sesame seeds) have a major significance on this day. Donating Til (sesame seeds) and offering them to Lord Vishnu and the forefathers is considered auspicious on the day. So, let’s learn more about the day through its dates, timings, history, significance and the benefits and how to celebrate the occasion.

Dates and Timings of Shattila Ekadashi

As Shattila Ekadashi is celebrated on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha in Magh month, this year the auspicious day falls on January 25, 2025 (Saturday). Ekadashi Tithi starts at 07:25 PM on 24th January and ends at 08:31 PM on 25th January. The Prana Time (when you can eat food after the fast) is from 07:12 AM to 09:21 AM. Therefore, the devotees can have their last meal on the afternoon of the 24th and break their fast on the 25th morning.

Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha

According to a legend, Shattila Ekadashi Vrath Katha begins with a wealthy elderly woman who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. She used to worship the lord with great devotion and dedication. Once she kept fast for a whole month to worship the lord and offered a lot for charity including clothing, jewellery and other valuable items but never offered food items or Til to anyone. To make her realise the importance of food, one day Lord Krishna converted himself into a Brahmin and asked the lady for alm. She got angry and offered him a pile of mud. After she died, she went to heaven where she was given a hut to live and a mango tree outside it. When she saw the hut empty, she became sad that after all the worshipping this is what she got.

Puja alter are set up on the occasion of Shattila Ekadashi.
Puja Alter

Lord Vishnu appeared in front of her and told her that she never offered food to the Brahmins so got an empty house. She realised her mistake and asked the Lord for forgiveness. He asked her to observe fast on Shattila Ekadashi which will help her get rid of her sins and get whatever she desires. Upon observing the fast on Shattila Ekadashi, soon started receiving things she desired. Thus the Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha makes us realise the importance of donating food and til to the Brahmins on this auspicious day. From that day onwards, Till or sesame seeds are extensively used as offerings to the lord in the form of puja samagri (worship material) and bhog (offerings).

Shattila Ekadashi Significance

Shattila Ekadashi is observed to please Lord Vishnu to get rid of past sins and attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Observing a fast on the day has both spiritual and health benefits. Shattila Ekadashi significance includes prosperity, wealth, liberation and spiritual growth fostering compassion and humility.

Devotees perform kirtan on Shattila Ekadashi.

The day helps one do away with worldly distractions and connect with the almighty.

Health Benefits of Shattila Ekadashi

Along with the spiritual significance, there are various health benefits of observing fast on Shattila Ekadashi which are as follows:

  • Natural Detoxification: Observing a fast on Ekadashi, offers a break to the digestive system which further helps to detoxify naturally.
  • Improves Gut Health: Fasting at regular intervals reduces the digestive load and improves gut health and digestion.
  • Weight Management: With detoxification and improved gut health, it becomes easier to increase metabolism and control weight.

Rituals during Shattila Ekadashi

If you wish to keep a fast for Shattila Ekadashi, like any other Ekadashi fast, it commences on the dawn of Ekadashi and continues till the morning of Dwadashi. The fast is broken during the prana on Dwadashi after prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu. Devotees on Shattila Ekadashi observe either nirjala (without water) fast or falahar (consume only milk, fruits or nuts), some even eat only sesame seeds throughout the day. They avoid eating grains, rice and certain pulses as they are believed to increase tamas (inertia) in the human body which becomes a hindrance in spiritual growth.

Devotees apply Tilak on Shattila Ekadashi.

However, the consumption of sesame seeds is considered significant as it is considered one of the purest forms of food believed to have originated from Lord Vishnu’s sweat during Samudra Manthan. Adding some sesame seeds to the water is considered auspicious on the day. You can also make ubtan or a paste of sesame seeds and apply it while taking a bath. It is also considered auspicious to use sesame seeds in puja samagri and bhog to be offered to Lord Vishnu. You can also donate the seeds on this day as it is believed that the more you donate the sesame seeds the longer you may stay in heaven.

Here are some of the rituals you can follow on Shattila Ekadashi:

Gandhi Punyatithi (death anniversary) is observed on 30th January. The country not only pays homage to the leader but also honours his unparalleled contributions to the country’s freedom struggle. In modern times, the significance of Gandhi has only risen due to his renowned acts and slogans. While Gandhi still remains an integral part of Indian history, let’s better understand his glory and long-living legacy.

Gandhi Punyatithi: Tracing Back in Time

We all know Gandhi as the Father of the Nation and to know that he was assassinated comes as a deep shock even in modern times. It is indeed important to understand the history of his assassination consisting of mixed views. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948 which was quite soon after India gained Independence from British rule.

Assassination of Gandhi

You must be wondering if it was any of the British officers or an enemy who indulged in this heartbreaking crime. However, the leader was assassinated by Nathiram Godse, a Hindu nationalist. It is only sad for you to know that he was assassinated during a prayer meeting at the Birla House in New Delhi. As Godse bowed to pay respect to Gandhi, he just then fired three bullets into Mahatma’s chest. It is also noted that he was shot at point-blank range, thereby suggesting that the assassination was very well planned. As Gandhi collapsed, he uttered his last words: Hey Ram!

1. Partition of India

Going back to 1948, Gandhi’s assassination was not a sudden incident. It was right since the partition of India and Pakistan when Gandhi settled in the hatred of Nathuram Godse. While Gandhi did not support the idea of partition, Godse believed that he was secretly supporting it. Gandhi even insisted on transferring INR 55 crores to Pakistan as a part of the partition agreement. That is when Godse started believing that such acts of Gandhi led to unfair treatment of the Hindus. He also believed that Gandhi was prioritising the interests of Muslims, thereby betraying Hindus.

2. Favourism towards Muslims

Nathuram also believed that Gandhi’s acts of Hindu-Muslim unity were not of great significance to the Hindus. He, in fact, opposed this idea as it would weaken the supremacy of Hindus. He even disbelieved the principles of non-violence and trust after witnessing the consequences of partition. That’s when he joined hands with Narayan Apte to plan the assassination.

Aftermath

Later, Godse delivered an elaborate speech to the public stating his reasons and beliefs about Gandhi’s favouritism for Muslims. While some believed him, others deeply mourned the loss of a heroic freedom fighter. Many believed that Godse disrupted the foundational values of India by this spine-chilling assassination. It sparked rage among many as Gandhi’s death invited attention from the globe. As hard as it is to believe, this assassination continues to spark debates between people, communities and leaders.

Festivities are deeply rooted in Indian culture as they hold great significance for the beliefs and spirituality of the people. Every festival has a different way of celebration which involves rituals and food and Sakat Chauth is one of them. Sakat Chauth also known as Maghi Chauth is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Sakat for the protection of children, removing obstacles and bringing good fortune, health and happiness. The festival is celebrated in most parts of the countries under different names. On this day, married women observe fast for the well-being and prosperity of their families.

Sakat Chauth is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

So, let’s learn about its dates, timings, history, religious significance, celebrations, different rituals and food.

Dates and Timings of Sakat Chauth 2025

Like most other Hindu festivals, the dates and timings of Sakat Chauth depend on the Hindu calendar. According to the calendar the festival is celebrated on the Chaturthi Tithi (Fourth Day) after a full moon of the Magha month, usually between January and February.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped on Sakat Chauth.

This year, the festival is being celebrated on the 17th of January from 4:06 AM to 5:30 AM the next day. Moreover, due to the alignment of the lunar cycle with the Magha month, the festival holds an additional significance in 2025.

History and Religious Significance of Sakat Chauth

The celebration of the Sakat Chauth dates back to ancient Hindu traditions and mythology. Usually, mothers observe Sakat Chauth fast for the well-being of their children, and couples observe the fast who face problems related to childbirth.

Various items are offered to Lord Ganesha during the rituals in Sakat Chauth.
Rituals in Sakat Chauth

There are three different stories associated with the Sakat Chauth Festival.

According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Ganesha is known for removing the obstacles of his devotees and removing any crises (sankat/sakat). The name of the festival also suggests Sakat Chauth. One day, Goddess Paravati went for a bath and instructed Lord Ganesha to keep a watch outside and not let anyone enter. Following his mother’s instructions, he did not allow Lord Shiva also to step in due to which the lord got angry and severed Ganesha’s head. When Parvati saw her son’s condition she began crying and demanded her husband to restore Ganesha’s life. After numerous efforts, Ganesha was given a second life by planing the head of an elephant. On the same day, he attained the position to be worshipped first during any celebrations or beginnings. On Sakat Chauth, he was blessed by all the deities and thus the day is considered auspicious to worship Lord Ganesha.

Another tale is associated with praying for Goddess Sakat. Once lived a potter in a village who made clay pots and put them in a kiln but the fire could not ripen the vessels even after a year. He addressed the situation to the monarch, who consulted the Rajpurohit, who proposed sacrificing a kid every time a kiln is prepared for cooking utensils. Each family then started sacrificing their children until it was Sakat Chauth. An old lady was to sacrifice her single son. She was a devotee of the Goddess Sakat, who handed her son with Betal nut of Sakat and “Dub ka Beeda” as protection and asked her son to pray while he was in the kiln. With the blessings of the Goddess, all vessels were made in a single night and all the sacrificed children and the son of the old lady made it out alive. Therefore, the day is marked for worshipping Sakat Mata along with the Lord Ganesh and women observe fast for the safety of their children.

According to a legend, Lord Ganesha is known for removing the obstacles of his devotees. Once a blind lady worshipped him and asked for a wealthy life, a healthy body, eyesight and a grandson. Lord fulfilled her wishes and ever since then, it is believed that whoever observes fast on the day, seeks his blessings for a healthy, wealthy and prosperous life.

Therefore, the rituals of Sakat Chauth connect the devotees with the divine, provide spiritual cleansing and protection from negative forces.

Celebration Details of Sakat Chauth

The devotees follow certain rituals to seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings. Even though the rituals vary from region to region, there are a few common processes throughout the country:

Til ladoo, moli, roli and diya are offered to Lord Ganesha on Sakat Chauth.
Puja Thali
  • Wake up early in the morning, clean your house and observe the fast throughout the day by just eating fruits. Some women even prefer not to drink water.
  • Set up the Lord Ganesha’s altars or puja mandals and create a mound of Lord Ganesha with til and mud.
